MAINTAINING SAFETY ON A CONSTRUCTION SITE DURING THE COVID-19 CRISIS

The world today has been put in a terrible situation due to the adverse effect of the pandemic that has crippled global economic activities.

Despite the lift on the lockdown by most countries, the sting of the coronavirus popularly referred to as Covid’19 is much felt, with vaccines still unavailable, individuals and organizations have adopted the new normal, by putting in place protocols to ensure the safety of all staff.

Construction firms have to adopt strict safety protocols asides from the existing HSE guidelines.

Below are some preventive measures to curb the spread of coronavirus while on site:

NO MASK NO SITE ENTRY POLICY.

They must be mandatory use of face mask which helps to prevent the contracting of virus air. The WHO(World Health Organization) has made this important has it is a major preventing measure especially in a public environment like a construction site, Make face mask spot available at every corner of the site to help the periodic change of the mask used my worked and easy access to it.

DISINFECTANT:

Disinfectant spray should be made available at the construction site to enable disinfecting the machines tools when in use and after use by various operative and also the main touchpoints such as doorknobs, surfaces and switches should be regularly cleaned at all times.

HAND WASH:

Proper provision of hand wash materials and antiseptic soaps should be made available at various strategic points of the construction site to help the worker keep a clean hand at all point in time, advised to wash their hands at interval regularly provided at every corner of the site.

HAND SANITIZER AND THERMOMETER:

Before entry to the site, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer and temperature check tool should be provided as workers should be tested before they get into the premises, and also hand sanitizers should be available at site points. For the workers to help them sanitize their hands at every point in time to keep them safe and control the risk of infection.

SOCIAL DISTANCING:

For a construction firm with a large number of workers, it is advised they should be grouped into batches, to maintain social distance and crowd control, you should advise advising workers to keep 2 meters apart at the minimum. They should avoid Skin-to-Skin and Face-to-Face contact. It is very important to know that safety is paramount in every organization and place of work we find ourselves especially at a construction site, so it’s important we know that this necessary thing which we’ve talked about are put in place to ensure adequate safety of the workers to fight against COVID 19.
